The good news is that light foam is generally not harmful to swimmers, but it is a clear signal that your water chemistry needs attention.

In Ottawa's climate, foam tends to show up most aggressively in early summer right after opening, when the water has been sitting under a cover all winter and organic matter has had months to accumulate. Encouraging swimmers to rinse off before entering the pool makes a meaningful long-term difference — even a quick shower removes the bulk of sunscreen and body oils before they enter your water.

Persistent foam that does not respond to chemical correction is occasionally a sign of a failing pool equipment seal leaking lubricant or hydraulic fluid into the water, or a new vinyl liner off-gassing residual manufacturing compounds. Both are less common but worth investigating if basic chemistry adjustments do not resolve the issue within a week.
