Cyanuric acid (CYA) levels can only be reduced by diluting the water — there is no chemical treatment, filter media, or additive that will break down or remove cyanuric acid once it is in solution. That is the honest answer, and any product claiming otherwise deserves serious skepticism.

That said, a full drain-and-refill is not your only option. A partial drain is the practical middle ground most Ottawa pool owners use, and it works well. The math is straightforward: if your CYA reads 150 ppm and you want to get down to 50 ppm, you need to replace roughly two-thirds of your pool water. You drain that fraction, refill with fresh municipal water (which contains essentially zero CYA), and retest. You may need to do this in stages rather than all at once, especially if your CYA is severely elevated.

For Ottawa specifically, timing matters here. The best window to do a partial drain is early to mid-June after opening, or in late August while the weather is still warm enough to comfortably rebalance your chemistry before the season ends. A few practical cautions worth knowing. Never fully drain a vinyl-lined inground pool — the liner can shrink, wrinkle, or pull away from the wall within hours of losing water pressure, and reseating it is an expensive professional repair. For a vinyl pool, drain only to the point where you still have water covering the main drain and protecting the liner.
